Singapore 2G Compliance Deadline for Handsets

Back

The Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) has issued a reminder about Singapore 2G compliance requirements for mobile handsets. Section 5.2.3 of the IMDA Technical Specification for Cellular Mobile Terminals (IMDA TS CMT) requires manufacturers to disable 2G connectivity by default.

Under this rule, handsets must not connect to 2G networks automatically. Users must take deliberate action to enable 2G connectivity through their device settings or a confirmation prompt.

Singapore 2G Compliance and Registration Deadlines

IMDA has confirmed that it will cancel equipment registrations for non-compliant handset models after 31 December 2026.

Once IMDA cancels a registration, companies cannot sell or supply the affected handset model in Singapore.

Manufacturers and suppliers should review their registered models to confirm compliance with Section 5.2.3.

For compliant handset models registered before 1 April 2026, companies must submit a completed VoLTE Conformance Testing / Verification Checklist.

IMDA must receive the signed checklist before 28 December 2026.

What Does the VoLTE Checklist Require?

The VoLTE checklist helps IMDA review each handset model’s compliance with the applicable requirements.

Manufacturers and suppliers must provide the following information:

Additionally, the checklist covers several VoLTE functions. These include registration, authentication, call control, codec selection and emergency calling.

The checklist also covers 2G connectivity and emergency cell broadcast requirements.

Companies must complete a separate checklist for each applicable registered handset model.

What Happens if a Handset Does Not Comply?

Companies must identify any registered handset models that cannot meet the requirement. They must also inform IMDA about the affected models.

Furthermore, IMDA warns that missing confirmation or supporting documents may lead to registration cancellation after 31 December 2026.

As a result, manufacturers and suppliers should review their registered handsets and prepare the required documents before the submission deadline.

Supporting Handset Compliance in Singapore

The Singapore 2G compliance reminder highlights the importance of meeting technical requirements and maintaining valid equipment registrations.

Manufacturers and suppliers should check their handset portfolios and confirm that each applicable model meets IMDA requirements.
