Japan has opened a public comment process on a regulatory proposal related to 920MHz wireless power systems. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) is leading this initiative. The consultation focuses on draft revisions for the outdoor use of 920MHz-band spatial transmission wireless power transmission systems. Importantly, the ministry will accept comments from 14 March 2026 to 13 April 2026.
Japan launches consultation on 920MHz wireless power
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has actively studied technical standards for outdoor use of 920MHz-band spatial transmission wireless power transmission systems. Moreover, the ministry reviewed related technical conditions through the Information and Communications Council. Based on a partial report, it prepared draft measures for the institutional framework. As a result, the ministry is now inviting public comments on these proposed revisions.
What is included in the draft revision
The consultation materials clearly outline two draft notices for amendment.
First, the draft revises the notice that defines uses, emission types, frequencies, and antenna power for specified low-power radio stations. Specifically, it expands the use category from “mobile object identification” to “mobile object identification or wireless power transmission.” In addition, it introduces a new category for wireless power transmission with the following parameters:
- Emission type: N0N
- Frequencies: 918 MHz and 919.2 MHz
- Antenna power: 0.25 W or less
Second, the draft updates the notice that specifies radio equipment designated by the Minister under the Radio Equipment Regulations. In particular, it revises item 13 to include radio equipment used for specified low-power radio stations under an additional provision cited in Article 49-14. Furthermore, the supplementary provision states that the notice will take effect on the day of promulgation.
Public comment timeline and process
The public comment guidelines define the scope of this consultation. They focus on the draft institutional revision for outdoor use and related matters of 920MHz-band wireless power transmission systems. Additionally, the ministry allows submissions through e-Gov, email, or post.
The submission period runs from 14 March 2026 to 13 April 2026. However, the guidelines clearly state that all comments must be written in Japanese.
After the consultation closes, the ministry will review all submissions. It then plans to proceed promptly with the required procedures, including revisions to the relevant notices.
