The South Korea SAR standard introduces KS C 3350 as a single harmonized framework. It replaces the previous standards KS C 3370-1 (Head) and KS C 3370-2 (Body), which are now repealed.
Moreover, the new standard aligns with the international IEC/IEEE 62209-1528:2020 standard. Measurement procedures are now consolidated for devices used within 20 cm of the body. These include smartphones, tablets, and wearables. This alignment aims to reduce testing discrepancies. It also facilitates the use of global test data.
New Procedural Requirements
In addition to standard unification, the update introduces critical procedural changes. Manufacturers must declare the maximum transmit power and production tolerance before testing begins. This applies to every wireless mode, including 5G, LTE, Wi-Fi 6/7, and Bluetooth.
The revised framework also updates the test methods. It requires the use of a specific simulated human body. It introduces a probe calibration method. It also applies power drift correction to measured SAR values.
Regarding testing distance, the RRA now requires it not to exceed 5 mm. If a device is intended for use at a different distance, the manufacturer must inform the laboratory in advance. A justification for the intended usage must also be provided.
Scope of Application
This regulatory update applies to devices used close to the body. These include smartphones, tablets, wearables such as smartwatches, wireless earbuds, and laptops. It also applies to wireless devices operating in the 4 MHz to 10 GHz frequency range.
